Richards Free Library will be closed Wednesday, December 31st, 2025 and Thursday, January 1st, 2026 in observance of the holidays. Happy New Year!!!

You may have noticed a new sign at the library entrance which states:
Library Property Guidelines:
Everything on this list may seem intuitive to you and me, but it is not so for the many children who come to the library after school every day. Because my staff and I are in the building and not outside, it is difficult to monitor the outside space. We have been experiencing issues with children throwing snowballs at patrons and at the building. They have also been congregating at the entrance to the building and in some cases, using the parking lot as a playground. In addition, unfortunately, on Wednesday, December 3rd, the art installation outside the Library Arts Center was damaged, perhaps in an attempt to access the roof of the building. The new sign is our way of clearly presenting the rules to everyone in the hope that we can maintain a safe outside space for all of our patrons. We thank you for your support in this endeavor.
Due to inclement weather, the Richards Free Library will close at 4 PM today, Wednesday, December 10th in order to keep staff and patrons safe. Thank you for understanding.
We will reopen on Thursday morning, December 11th, from 10 am to 8pm. See you soon!

Please note there will be a change to the hours of operation beginning Tuesday, September 30th: The library will be closing at 6pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Thank you for your understanding!
I am honored and thankful to be appointed the new Library Director at the Richards Free Library in Newport, NH. For the past three years, as Assistant Director, I have worked closely with our amazing staff and patrons, learning so much along the way. When I stepped into the role of Interim Director 4 weeks ago, I was truly humbled by the trust and support from our community, our library staff, and our Board of Trustees. As the new Library Director, I am committed to upholding the high standards of service and excellence for which our library is known.
To our patrons, I want you to know that I am dedicated to you and our community. The Richards Free Library is more than just a place to borrow books; it is a hub of knowledge, creativity, and connection. I will work hard to make sure the library continues to be an important part of our community and that every visitor feels welcome. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we start this new chapter together.
