Portrait of Elizabeth A. Richards Donated to Library

January 28, 2014

This portrait of Elizabeth A. (Lizzie) Richards was recently donated to the Richards Free Library by her niece Margaret Richards Chapman. It hangs in the second floor hallway along with portraits of Lizzie’s father Dexter Richards and her brother Seth Mason Richards. When Lizzie died at the age of twenty her father donated a new organ to Newport’s South Congregational Church in her memory. Part of that organ remains as the case for the present organ, with the original memorial plaque still attached. LizzieRIchards

Volunteer of the Year

December 9, 2013

20131205_163820

This year’s Pamela Gay Award for Volunteerism was given to Priscilla Hagebusch at the 13th annual Volunteer Tea in the library’s Oval Room.

Priscilla is an enthusiastic volunteer at the library. She shares her many artistic talents with us on a regular basis from creating window treatments to baking dozens and dozens of cookies for the library festival. Priscilla is the granddaughter of a former trustee and founder of the Friends of the Richards Library and the Sarah Josepha Hale Award.

The award is named in honor of Pamela Gay who, before her death, volunteered countless hours at the library and exemplified the true spirit of volunteerism not only at the library but several other area organizations.
