About Us

Friends of the Richards Free Library

The Friends of the Richards Free Library is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to enriching our library. Our primary role is to raise money to help fund items that are not covered by the library budget, including: library books, games, special programs, as well as digital subscriptions to Ancestry.com, The New York Times, Kanopy Movies & TV, plus e-books, magazines and audio books on the Libby platform.

Throughout the year, we raise funds via memberships and donations along with the proceeds from the annual Library Festival which takes place on the 4th Saturday in August. The Festival includes a huge Book Sale, a Cookie Walk, a Children’s Tent, a Prize Raffle, and More! The Book Sale opens to the public at 9:00 am on Saturday, but active Members of the Friends receive early admittance at 8:00 am.

Working the Festival is great fun, and we can always use an extra hand, so if you’d like to become involved, send an email to us at: friends@newport.lib.nh.us or drop us a note. If you are interested in donating to the sale, we are glad to take your gently-used books about:

Animals, Art & Photography,
Biography, Cookbooks, Crafts,
Fiction, Graphic Novels/Manga,
History, Home & Garden,
Humor & Entertainment,
Large Print, Literature, Military,
Mystery/Thriller/ Suspense,
Picture Books for Babies and Children,
Books for Kids and Young Adults,
Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Boats,
Romance, Science Fiction/Fantasy,
Spirituality, Sports, Travel,
Wellness, Westerns,
Miscellaneous/Special Interest Non-Fiction works on all kinds of topics.

The staff at The Richards Free Library takes in donations of gently-used books during regular Library hours through the First Saturday in August. As you choose items to donate, please refrain from including books that are marked up or damaged. We also do not accept encyclopedias, textbooks, workbooks, outdated references, or anything exposed to mold and mildew as is sometimes the case with items that have been stored in an unconditioned space like an unheated attic, basement, or garage.

Throughout the year, on the first Monday of the month, join us at the Library at 10:00 am where we gather to help out the Library staff with whatever needs doing, followed by a chat over a cup of coffee and a tasty treat. And if the weather is good, stop by and see us at the Farmer’s Market on Friday afternoons and take home some free books!
