What is “genrefying” and why are we doing it?

July 19, 2023

You may notice Molly and Justine working away in the teen room. They’re working on a big project to Genrefy the fiction collection. What does this mean? How will it make browsing different? Let’s talk about it!

When you go into a bookstore, you’ll often find books sorted by genre. You’ll find a “Mystery” section and a “Fantasy” section. Sometimes you’ll find a “Paranormal” section or even a “Paranormal Romance” section. These are examples of genres, and sorting the books by genres is what we call “genrefying a collection.”

We’ve noticed over the last year, since Molly was hired as our Youth Services Assistant to build relationships with the teens in our community, that teens are asking for books in a specific genre. This is different than how adults usually browse the collection, looking for a specific title or all the works by a specific author. Teens seem to come into the library looking for “romance” books or “dark and spooky” books. To make browsing easier for them, we’re working to organize the collection in a way that makes sense to their requests.

The project has just begun and is already evolving; there are so many genres and subgenres! But we promise, if nothing else, you’ll be able to easily find romance, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, horror, and realistic fiction.

Goodbye Overdrive, Hello Libby!

April 25, 2023

Overdrive, the company, is a vendor we use for downloadable library materials. Together with all the public libraries in the state of New Hampshire, we are able to purchase and lease shared content to offer a wide variety of downloadable ebooks, audio books, and magazines.

Overdrive, the app, is going away. Libby, the new app to access our Overdrive content, has been available for a few years now and will officially replace the Overdrive app on May 1st.

Libby is a very user-friendly app and Justine, our Library Director, has posted a few tutorials to help you get started with Libby!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out by email to rfl@newport.lib.nh.us or by phone at 603-863-3430. You can also reach out to schedule a one-on-one appointment to learn more about Libby and how to access all of the great content right from your smart phone or tablet!

Check out Justine’s tutorials for Libby and other resources on our tutorials page.

Newport Nuggets… gems from the RFL archives

February 24, 2012

Introducing a new RFL blog: treasures from our collection of scrapbooks!
Scrap books, first known as commonplace books in the 1600’s, have always been a way for people to collect meaningful materials. Scrap booking became a popular hobby in the United States around 1825, and remained so into the early part of the 2oth century. Some famous early “scrapbookers” were Thomas Jefferson, who began in 1758 at age fifteen, and Mark Twain, who invented a self-pasting scrapbook in 1872. Falling off after World War I, scrap booking regained its popularity in 1987 when Creative Memories began marketing scrapbooks. The Richards Free Library has a collection of personal scrapbooks which reflect historical Newport. Although they seldom record the source or date of entries, we hope you will like these snapshots of local history. So check back soon to see what interesting stories “Newport Nuggets” has mined from these archives!
