We’re Hiring a Teen Services Library Assistant

Teen Services Library Assistant @ Richards Free Library, Newport, NH

We are seeking a self-motivated, community-focused Teen Services Library Assistant to work 20+ hours per week, including some Saturdays, to provide our patrons with essential services, including circulation, readers’ advisory, programming, and collection development.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):

High School diploma or GED

Successful experience as a library employee, with children and/or teens, or in a customer-focused environment is preferred.

Benefits:

Prorated earned sick and vacation time.

Holiday time when holiday observance day falls on a day within the normal work schedule.

Hiring Wage Range:

$16.50-$18.50/hour. Must be available to work all hours of library operations including evenings and some Saturdays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Utilizes the library’s integrated library system software to answer patron questions, update records, place holds for items, and more.

* Supports collection development by keeping teen materials organized, shelf reading, assisting with weeding, and participating in selection of teen materials.

* Creates dynamic, interesting, eye-catching book displays for teens.

* Ensures spaces in the children’s and teen areas are tidy at all times.

Circulation and Patron Services:

* Staffs the teen desk in the mid-afternoons and the circulation desk as needed

* Registers new patrons and issues library cards.

* Helps patrons locate books and navigate the library catalog.

* Provides readers’ advisory, including recommendations from within the collection.

Competencies and Job Attitudes:

* Must enjoy working with the public, especially teens.

* Creates a welcoming, warm, and respectful environment for all library patrons and staff.

* Is self-motivated and proactive; demonstrates creativity, initiative, and enthusiasm. 

* Completes delegated tasks with accuracy, and meets deadlines.

We’re Hiring a Library Page!

Are you a high school student, at least 16 years old, with a passion for community service? We’re hiring a library page at the Richards Free Library. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable experience while supporting your local library.

Our Pages work 9-12 hours a week during the school year and 15-19 hours a week during the summer. Their main responsibility is to shelve books, but they also help with numerous projects around the library. 

Applications are being accepted until the position is filled.

School Year Required Hours:

Wednesday 3-6pm, Thursday 5-8pm, Friday 3-6pm, every other Saturday 10am-2pm.

Summer Required Hours:

Wednesday 1-6pm, Thursday 3-8pm, Friday 1-6pm, every other Saturday 10am-2pm.

Hourly Pay: $10.00

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Organize and shelve all library materials efficiently and accurately.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of library materials, shelves, and reading areas.
  • Clean and tidy up kitchen areas by the end of each day.
  • Assist with various tasks at the circulation desk including but not limited to:
    • checking materials in and out.
    • creating new patron accounts.
    • answering patron questions
    • making and answering phone calls.
  • Manage and organize basement storage areas to optimize space and accessibility.
  • Update public bulletin boards regularly.
  • Bring items to upper floors and basement as needed.
  • Assist Youth Services Librarian with summer reading program events.
  • Create engaging book displays.
  • Aid in tasks related to the care and well-being of our library cats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical capability to fulfill job responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to ask questions when confused about a task.
  • Ability to handle situations with tact, professionalism, and courtesy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, staff from other libraries, and the public.
  • Some familiarity with/willingness to learn the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Competence in using computers, printers, search engines, and navigating computer databases efficiently.
